120 MPs got arrested in Bangladesh by the Interim Government to Score Political Vengeance

On August 05, 2024, the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was overthrown by a violent mob under the guise of the ‘anti-discrimination student movement’, unleashing an incomprehensible reign of terror on the streets of Dhaka and other cities. An ‘Interim Government’ led by Dr. Yunus was installed by the Apex Court of Bangladesh on August 8, 2024. From August 9, 2024, to October 5, 2025, 120 elected Members of Parliament (MPs), including 15 female MPs, were arrested without specific charges, often without warrants. Later, 7 MPs were granted bail for various reasons. Despite being eligible for bail under the existing laws of Bangladesh, the remaining 113 MPs have been repeatedly denied it, facing abuse and mental torture by police and judiciary, physical attacks in custody and the court premises by the mobs and even by the lawyers supporting the Interim Government. Bail granted by the High Court Division was frequently stayed by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, and detained MPs released on bail were ‘shown-arrested’ with new charges at the jail gates. The detained MPs are often remanded to police custody by the Judges without the presence of any defense lawyer.

In light of these severe human rights violations and the blatant disregard for legal norms and democratic accountability, the Global Center for Democratic Governance (GCDG) has prepared a detailed PDF report to document and bring international attention to these abuses. This report serves as part of GCDG’s ongoing mission to uphold justice, the rule of law, and democratic integrity in Bangladesh.
