Criminal cases filed against journalists increased 550 percent compared to last year: Charlotte Jacquemart

Canada-based think tank organization “Global Center for Democratic Governance (GCDG)” organized a virtual international seminar on “Bangladesh in Crisis: Human Rights, Justice, and the Future of Democracy” on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at 9:00 PM Bangladesh time.

GCDG President Professor Dr. Md. Habibe Millat chaired the virtual seminar. Lord Raminder Singh Ranger, a member of the House of Lords of England; Michael Rubin, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute; and Charlotte Jacquemart, editor of Public Radio of Switzerland, were distinguished speakers.

 Charlotte Jacquimert said that 195 criminal cases were filed against journalists over the course of one year (August 2024 to July 2025) during the interim government. This is more than 550% higher than the previous year. She also expressed concern that 878 journalists were subjected to various forms of harassment during the same period. Jacquemart demanded the withdrawal of all fabricated cases filed against journalists and the immediate release of those arrested.

Michael Rubin commented that Dr. Muhammad Yunus is so immersed in self-centeredness that he is giving more importance to his own good and revenge than to the country’s good.

In the opening speech, Professor Dr. Md. Habibe Millat expressed concern about human rights violations, the deterioration of law and order, and the lack of justice in Bangladesh. He expressed hope that the overall situation in the country will improve if a democratic government is elected through elections with the participation of all parties. At the same time, Dr. Millat demanded the immediate release of all accused of false cases of political vendetta, including the closure of the International Crimes Tribunal, Bangladesh, and the withdrawal of all false cases.

GCDG member Arifa Rahman Ruma, a USA expatriate, moderated the seminar. GCDG Executive Director, Md. Golam Kibria Talukder expressed his gratitude at the seminar. The media partner of the seminar was the UK-based online daily Global Bangla.

কানাডা ভিত্তিক থিঙ্কট্যাঙ্ক সংগঠন “গ্লোবাল সেন্টার ফর ডেমোক্রেটিক গভর্ন্যান্স (জিসিডিজি)” ১০ ডিসেম্বর ২০২৫, বুধবার বাংলাদেশ সময় রাত ৯:০০ টায় একটি ভার্চুয়াল আন্তর্জাতিক সেমিনারের আয়োজন করে।

“Bangladesh in Crisis: Human Rights, Justice, and the Future of Democracy” শীর্ষক আয়োজিত এ ভার্চুয়াল সেমিনারে জিসিডিজি’র সভাপতি অধ্যাপক ডা. মো. হাবিবে মিল্লাত এর সভাপতিত্বে বক্তব্য রাখেন ইংল্যান্ডের হাউজ অব লর্ডস এর সদস্য লর্ড রামিন্দ্র সিং রেঞ্জার, আমেরিকান এন্টারপ্রাইজ ইনস্টিটিউট এর সিনিয়র ফেলো মাইকেল রুবিন এবং সুইজারল্যান্ডের পাবলিক রেডিওর এডিটর শার্লট জ্যাকুইমার্ট।

বক্তব্যে শার্লট জ্যাকুইমার্ট বলেন, অন্তর্বর্তীকালীন সরকারের সময়ে এক বছরে (আগস্ট-২০২৪ থেকে জুলাই-২০২৫) সাংবাদিকদের বিরুদ্ধে ১৯৫টি ফৌজদারি মামলা দায়ের করা হয়েছে। যা বিগত বছরের তুলনায় ৫৫০ শতাংশেরও বেশি। এছাড়াও একই সময়ে ৮৭৮জন সাংবাদিক নানাভাবে হেনস্থার শিকার হওয়ায় তিনি উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করেন। জ্যাকুইমার্ট সাংবাদিকদের বিরুদ্ধে দায়েরকৃত সকল মামলা প্রত্যাহার এবং গ্রেফতারকৃতদের অবিলম্বে মুক্তির দাবি করেন।

মাইকেল রুবিন মন্তব্য করেন, ড. মুহাম্মদ ইউনূস আত্মকেন্দ্রিকতায় এতটাই ডুবে আছেন যে, তিনি দেশের ভালোর চেয়ে নিজের ভালো এবং প্রতিশোধ পরায়নতাকে বেশি গুরুত্ব দিচ্ছেন।

সভাপতির সূচনা বক্তব্যে অধ্যাপক ডা. মো. হাবিবে মিল্লাত বাংলাদেশের মানবাধিকার লঙ্ঘন, আইনশৃঙ্খলা পরিস্থিতির অবনতি, বিচারহীনতার পরিস্থিতি তুলে ধরে উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করেন। সকল দলের অংশগ্রহণে নির্বাচনের মাধ্যমে নির্বাচিত গণতান্ত্রিক সরকার দায়িত্ব গ্রহণ করলে দেশের সার্বিক পরিস্থিতির উন্নতি হবে বলে তিনি আশাব্যক্ত করেন। সাথে সাথে ডা. মিল্লাত আন্তর্জাতিক অপরাধ ট্রাইব্যুনাল, বাংলাদেশ এর কার্যক্রম বন্ধসহ রাজনৈতিক প্রতিহিংসামূলক সকল মিথ্যা মামলা প্রত্যাহার এবং সকলের অবিলম্বে মুক্তির দাবি করেন।

সেমিনারটির সঞ্চালনা করেন জিসিডিজি’র সদস্য যুক্তরাষ্ট্র প্রবাসী আরিফা রহমান রুমা। সেমিনারে ধন্যবাদ জ্ঞাপন করেন জিসিডিজি’র নির্বাহী পরিচালক মো. গোলাম কিবরিয়া তালুকদার। সেমিনারের মিডিয়া পার্টনার ছিলো ইউকে ভিত্তিক দৈনিক অনলাইন গ্লোবাল বাংলা।
